Picture Book Recs: Kindergarten Editions

Today was my son’s 1st day of 3rd grade and momma is feeling a little sad.  I can’t believe that he has grown-up so fast (Plus he didn’t want me to walk him to class.  I’m still recovering from this blow). This got me to thinking about his first “first day of school” so I decided to put together some books on starting kindergarten that capture what it feels like for kids and parents.  Here are a few recommendations:

The Night Before Kindergarten

The Night Before Kindergarten Written by Natasha Wing, Illustrated by Julie Durrell –  This is an adorable take on “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.”  It was perfect for kindergarteners and parents alike.

Adventure Annie Goes to Kindergarten

Adventure Annie Goes to Kindergarten Written by Toni Buzzeo, Illustrated by Amy Wummer –  This follows Annie a precocious little girl who is always looking for an adventure.  This picture features a Latinx protagonist and has a diverse cast of characters in the book.  I loved the art style and I want to look into more books in this series.

Mom, It's My First Day of Kindergarten!

Mom, It’s My First Day of Kindergarten! Written and Illustrated by Hyewon Yum – This story aptly showed the nervousness and anxiety of the kid and the parent and taught that it would all be alright.  The art style was unique and I really enjoyed it.

Welcome to Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten Written and Illustrated by Anne Rockwall – This was a book about meeting the teacher for the first time and becoming acclimated to a new school and environment.  The art style was very simplistic and was almost child-like in it’s execution. I really enjoyed this.

Planet Kindergarten

Planet Kindergarten Written by Sue Ganz-Schmitt and Illustrated by Shane Prigmore –  I love these books.  I read a different book in this series and loved the story.  This book pretty much makes going to kindergarten into a space mission.  It is absolutely adorable and my favorite of the bunch!

These are just a few recommendations I have for Kindergarten and Kindergartener parents.  I feel your pain and I can’t say that it gets easier to see them off to school.

Have you followed me on social media yet.
