Hey y’all! I’m back with another “Will I continue?” post. An ongoing series where I discuss if I will in fact be continuing in book series.
Today we are here to talk about An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir, book one in the Ember Quartet. I recently listened to the audiobook and I really enjoyed the two narrators.
In this story we follow Laia and Elias. Laia suffers a major tragedy at the beginning of the book and this sets her to have to flee home and seek help from the Rebel forces. Elias is a soldier in training for the martial state and is close to graduating but he is not sure if the life of being an elite soldier is the life that he wants.
Throughout, An Ember in the Ashes we are swept away into a story with a ton of political intrigue and adventure. The way that Tahir weaves the two stories of Laia and Elias had me interested throughout the entire book. Laia was such a great character. I get tired of young adult fantasies where the teen is completely fearless and never expresses any doubt in their ability. Laia was definitely not that way. She expressed her fear and her inner dialogue was so realistic given the circumstances that she was facing. Elias was a strong character but the inner struggle that he felt about his position in the world felt so realistic. The writing style was beautiful without being too overdone. I was enthralled in the storytelling.
The few things I didn’t enjoy were the romances that popped up throughout the book. I wasn’t convinced about the main couple, even though I saw it coming. I don’t think there was enough buildup for the main couple to get together. There was also like a love triangle in the story that I also wasn’t sold on. To be clear I don’t hate love triangles, I find them entertaining.
So Will I Continue?…… Yes!
I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this world and Sabaa Tahir is an excellent storyteller. There was a great balance of action and calm moments. Also, the ending! I have to know what is going on. The last hour of the audiobook I was completely caught up in the story and the plot and what was going to happen next. I will definitely be picking up book 2, A Torch Against the Night, very soon. The third book comes out on June 12 and depending on how book 2 goes, which I have high hopes for, I will definitely be reading book 3.
