Post A Day May: I Read My First Discworld Novel!

Hey y’all! When I started following people in the book community, I kept hearing about Discworld books by Terry Pratchett.  For some reason in my childhood these were not popular books that me and my friends read. Anyway, I thought that I would pick one up and try it and I absolutely loved it. I started with Equal Rites.

Equal Rites is the story of Esk who is a wizard. This was a big mistake because girls cannot be wizards.  The town witch Granny Weatherwax tries to apprentice the young girl but she does not know how to train a wizard. This causes Granny and Esk to go on an adventure from Bad Ass to the Unseen University, a prestigious wizard academy. Will Esk and Granny Weatherwax be able to get her into this boys club?

This book was so funny and thought provoking. I absolutely loved the characters, Granny Weatherwax being my favorite. Granny Weatherwax was hilarious and sassy and everything that I love book characters to be. She was no nonsense and I just loved her. Esk was also a strong character, I enjoyed how authentically young she was without being naive and how she wasn’t afraid to stand up to boys.

I enjoyed the social issues that Pratchett address, obviously this one is about equal rights between woman and men. It never felt heavy handed or over the top. It really just made me think. I can see the merit in re-reading this book and picking up on all the nuances that are placed throughout the story.

My one complaint of is that at times Pratchett’s writing can be a bit meandering. There were times where a topic would come up and we would be down a rabbit hole. We would pop back up and get back to the story.

Overall, this was a great entrance to the Discworld and I’m so happy I read. I am legit all in for these books and can’t wait to read some more books set in Discworld and meet some of the other characters. From my research, there are sub-series to the overarching series. I think I’m going to work my way through the witches series first, then pick another sub-series to work my way through. This will take a while as this is a 40+ book series.

Have you read any of the Discworld books? Which one is your favorite? Let’s chat in the comments.

  1. I’ve heard this is a great place to start! I started with Mort the first in the death series about a month ago. This one sounds really interesting I didn’t know that it talked about social issues. I’m even more excited about this one now!
