Hey y’all! Today I’m doing my weekly update post. I was in a terrible reading slump last week but I read a book that finally pulled me out of it and I’m back rolling. I think I had a little burnout from reading so many books this year. I will give all my mid-year stats at the beginning of July and do all the mid-year fun then.
What I Recently Read
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee is a family saga that takes place from 1911 – 1989. It follows a Korean family who lives in Japan and the Pachinko business plays a large part in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved the storyline. I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction but I did enjoy learning about Japanese occupation of Korea and about the discrimination that Koreans faced in Japan.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride Vol. 1 by Kore Yamazaki – I’m pretty sure that I have a manga series that I can get behind. While I recognize some of the problems with the story, I still thoroughly enjoyed this volume and will be picking up the next couple.
Circe by Madeline Miller – This is the book that pulled me out of my reading slump! I picked it up and was immediately wrapped up completely in the story. This is a character driven story about Circe who is a witch, daughter of Helios and a nymph. She does something and is exiled to an island where she must remain all of her days. The book just follows her story. I loved this story but not as much as I did Song of Achilles. I do plan on doing a mash-up review of both books soon, so stay tuned.
What I’m Currently Reading
While I have a lot of books on my Goodreads shelf as currently reading, these are the two that I am focused on presently.
The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery – I’m enjoying this book, but it did take me about halfway to really care. This is a stream of consciousness novel and we know that these are really hit or miss for me. I will probably finish this tonight when I get off of work.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte – I have been listening to this on audio and am about halfway through. I am enjoying it and I wish at times that I was reading the physical copy because there are so many quotes that are jumping out at me.
What I Plan to Read
I’m keeping things pretty small this week because I got some exciting library books that may take precedence over some of my owned books.
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson – This book has been on my shelf for over a year and I keep putting it off. I really want to read this because she has a new book I’m interested in coming out soon and I want to see if I gel with her writing style. This book is about a lady who dies and re-lives her life over and over again.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows – This is an epistolary novel that takes place after WW2. I don’t know a whole lot about it but I have heard that it is a really good historical fiction. While I don’t always gravitate to books that take place around WW2, I was interested in this one.
That is everything that I have recently finished and what I plan to pick up over this next week.

It looks like you are reading some amazing books! I really enjoy The Ancient Magus Bride series. I think the 1st book was the weakest of the ones published so far
