Hey y’all! It’s time for another weekly wrap-up and TBR. I managed to read a lot last week due to Independence Day and I was just in a reading mood. Plus a couple of the things I read were really short. Let’s see what I managed to read and what I plan on finishing or reading soon.
What I Finished
Artificial Condition by Martha Wells – This is the second book in the Murderbot series, All Systems Red being the first, and I enjoyed this one just as much as the first. I love Murderbot as a character and I can’t wait for the next two to come out. If you haven’t started this novella series, I strongly recommend that do.
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor – I really enjoyed this book, which was a surprise because I listened to Daughter of Smoke and Bone and didn’t love it. After reading this, I will probably attempt to read the physical copy. But back to Strange the Dreamer. It took me about 150 pages to get into the story and adjust to Taylor’s writing style. Taylor is such an eloquent writer and the descriptions were so intense that I could actually picture the settings. The characters were fully fleshed out and I cared so deeply for them. I will be picking up the next book in October. I’m curious to see where the story goes because it could shoot off in so many directions. This was my first tome completed for Tome Topple. This completed the challenge of read a tome that is a part of a series.
Orange the Complete Collection Volume 1 by Ichigo Takano – I LOVED this manga. I was on pins and needles to see where the story was going and the romance was so cute and too innocent for this world. Orange is the story of a girl who receives a letter from her future self. Inside the letters she is working to save one of her friends in a friend group. It touches on so many issues that I did not expect from a manga such as grief, suicide, and coming of age. It sounds like it is heavy, but there is a lightness to the story that made me flip so fast through this volume. This was my second tome finished for Tome Topple. This completed the challenge of read a graphic novel.
Lifel1k3 by Jay Kristoff – This is a sci-fi that is like an Anastasia re-telling mixed with Mad Max. I want to do a full review of this book. But I did enjoy this book very much and THAT ENDING THOUGH!!!
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor – This is a sci-fi novella that follows a girl who is the first of her people to be accepted to a prestigious university. Her people don’t leave home, so she has to sneak off on the ship that will take her to the university. Something happens on the ship and she is the only one who can help. This was another one I picked up because of the hype. I read this in one sitting on Saturday and I feel that is the best way to consume this 96 page novella. There are issued that are touched on that I suspect will be discussed in the other two in the series. I liked the story and would recommend, but I don’t know if I was completely obsessed.
What I’m Currently Reading
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton – This is a contemporary, historical fiction novel. It starts when a little girl is abandoned on a dock at the turn of the century in Australia. Then we follow Nell who finds out on her 21st birthday that the people who had raised her this whole time were in fact not her parents. Nell begins a search to figure out who she is. The pieces don’t really come together until after Nell’s death when Cassandra, Nell’s granddaughter, starts following the information that Nell left behind to put the pieces together. I’m about halfway through this and I’m enjoying it. It follows several different timelines as we figure out Nell’s history and who she belongs to. I’m curious to see how this all comes together. I’m reading this for the Tome Topple challenge of read an adult book.
The Exiled Queen by Cinda Willams Chima – I picked this up on whim because I have been wanting to continue this series forever. I am so happy to be back in this world and can’t wait to see what happens to the characters.
Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray – This is the second book in The Diviners series and I’m listening to it on audio. This is just as good as the first one. We get introduced to new characters and we get to see what our old characters are up to. I’m not that far in and I might not finish by the end of Tome Topple but I do plan to put a considerable dent in it.
What I Plan to Read
Since I have so many books that I’m in the middle of, I will not be adding anymore to the stack. I do have a couple of ARCs that I want to complete, but I will probably get to them this weekend because they are all so short. But who knows.
These are all the books that I completed, what I am currently reading, and what I plan to read. This is a very ambitious book stack but if I make progress in all of them and finish and couple I will feel accomplished. I have already finished 5 books this month, so I’m hoping I will be able to keep pace.
What are you currently reading? And what have you recently finished? Let’s chat in the comments.
