Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

Hey y’all! Today I’m finally doing the Mid-year Book Freakout Tag. I did this last year and I’m excited to get to do it again. Let’s see my responses to these questions.

Best book you’ve read so far in 2018
The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne  (review)-  This book was just so good and captivating and awesome.
Nevermoor: The Trials of Moorigan Crow by Jessica Townsend – This is my new middle grade obsession and I can’t wait to continue.

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2018
Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (review)- This is actually my favorite book in the trilogy. The character arcs were great in this one and I enjoyed the entire plot that is contained in this story.

New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang – This one sounds like a mix of all my favorite things, war, political intrigue, historical fiction, and fantasy. I really can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
I will list three that I am most excited for at this moment:
A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole – This book follows the best friend character in A Princess in Theory (review), and she was one of my favorites.
Bloody Rose by Nicolas Eames – This is his next book and I am here for it. I loved Kings of the Wyld (review) and I’m excited to learn more about Rose.
Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake – I need this book in my life immediately.  I love the Three Dark Crowns series. It’s not perfect but I enjoy it.

Biggest disappointment
Waking Gods by Sylvain Nueval – This is the second book in the Themis files and while I did enjoy it and what happened during it, it did not stick with me like the first one. I will finish the trilogy but I hope that it’s worth it.

Biggest surprise
The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne – When I heard the premise of the book, I expected that I would enjoy the read but not love it. I LOVED this book! I have a full review and I tell people about it all the time. This book was heartbreaking, heartwarming, funny, hilarious, and now one of my favorites.

Favorite new author (debut or new to you)
Cinda Williams Chima is my new to me author. I loved the way that she crafted The Demon King (review). I am currently reading The Exiled Queen, book 2 in the Seven Realms series. I’m so glad that I have so many more of her books to read.
Jessica Townsend is the author of Nevermoor: The Trials of Moorigan Crow.  I loved this book and am impatiently waiting for Wundersmith: The Calling of Moorigan Crow, the second in the series. This book was well crafted, funny, and just everything that I enjoy about reading middle grade.

Newest fictional crush
I don’t have one. I really thought about it but nothing stood out.

Newest favorite character
Cyril Avery from The Heart’s Invisible Furies. He was so sweet and rolled with the punches. He had the right kind of humor and a quiet strength as he was navigating life.

Book that made you cry
Far From the Tree by Robin Benway  – There were so many scenes in this book that had me crying real tears. I have a full review of this in my Robin Benway Mash-up Review.

Book that made you happy
River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey (review)- This novella totally caught me off guard. I didn’t know that I could love characters so much in such a short time. The audio book for this was amazing. I talk about it in my Favorite Audio Books (So Far).

Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year
Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan (review) – While I wasn’t completely obsessed with this book, this is still a gorgeous cover.

What book do you need to read by the end of the year?
There are so many. I would like to make a large dent in my TBR pile and there are some sequels coming out in the second half that I want to read. It’s way too many to name but I may do a separate post.

This is my Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag.
