Favorite Reads from the 1st Quarter

Hey y’all! Today I wanted to talk about my favorite reads of the first quarter of the year. I was able to complete 33 books in the first quarter of the year.
* 9 were on audio
* 13 were books that I owned
* 15 were YA books
* 1 was Middle Grade
* 3 were series conclusions
* 4 were non fiction

Five Star Reads
* The Gray Wolf Throne by Cinda Williams Chima (Book 3 in The Seven Realms series)
* Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
* Becoming by Michelle Obama
* On the Come Up by Angie Thomas
* The Crimson Crown by Cinda Williams Chima (Finale of The Seven Realms Series)

Out of all of the five star reads that I read in the first quarter I think it is pretty impossible for me to pick an absolute favorite. Each one of my five star reads have a unique place in my heart.

The two Cinda Williams Chima books, The Gray Wolf Throne and The Crimson Crown, are just a well written, well thought out fantasy series, with characters you actually care about and political intrigue that is just interesting enough without being overexplained.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens hit the perfect spot for me with literary fiction that was carefully balanced with a character study and an interesting plot. It also has one of the best and most realistic courtroom scenes that I have ever read. And that’s saying a lot because I have seen my fair share in my line of work.

Becoming by Michelle Obama was a five star from me because not only is Michelle Obama’s life so interesting but the writing was actually really good. And the audio was perfection.

And On the Come Up by Angie Thomas had me shook. Not only does she accurately portray what it is like to live in a lower income area and what it’s like to try to get out. But she also was able to show how latent racism is not acknowledge, so when a patent, targeted racist act happens, we are more like to victim blame. This is an important narrative that I have not come across and it was so raw and real without trying to make a point.

These are my favorite reads for the first quarter of the year. I have been working to be a little stingy with my 5 stars this year and I’m so glad I am. It has helped me to have a more critical eye while reading to see if What I’m saying is 5 stars, is really 5 star worthy.
