A Darker Shade of Magic starts this trilogy. We are in a world that has 4 londons: red, grey, white, and black. Each London has a varying degree of magic. Our main characters in the first book is Kell who is a magician with a special kind of magic that allows him to travel to the different Londons. We also follow the thief and con-woman Lila Bard who cross paths with Kell and things go down. The sequels are A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light.
When I finished this series my overall feelings were, this was fine. I’m not absolutely in love with the series, but I didn’t hate it. A Conjuring of Light was the strongest of the three novels because I enjoyed getting the back story of one of the side characters who was so intriguing to me throughout the first two books.
The strongest part of this book are the action scenes. They are what propels you through the stories. There weren’t any characters that I would consider favorites, except maybe the prince, and Lila was just outright annoying. The world-building would be the second best part of these books. I felt that although, it could have gotten repetitive each London had a very distinct feel to it. Another thing that I didn’t enjoy was the romance that happens. I didn’t think that it was necessary and honestly I thought Kell could do better.
I have a very strange relationship with Victoria Schwabs writing. There is something about it that I can’t fully engage with and I think it’s just a me thing. I have read a total of five of her books and didn’t love them, however I do recommend them.
Anyway, I do recommend this series for a particular reader. This is an excellent way to introduce fantasy, to a none fantasy reader. The world and magic system isn’t too complex, therefore it is not hard to follow. Also, there is a plot that will help you get through the books.
What did you think of the Shades of Magic trilogy? Did you love it? Is it a favorite? Let’s chat in the comments.
