October 2019 Wrap-up

Hey y’all!! Today I wanted to do an October Wrap-up. In the month of October I read 8 books. That wasn’t my goal but I my mental health was spiraling, so yeah there’s that. Anyway here are the 8 books that I read in October.

Halloween Boo by Sarah Spade – this is a new adult Halloween romance novella about a girl who has a relationship with a ghost. It’s as ridiculous as it sounds and it was so good. I will probably read the other novellas in this holiday series.

The Humans by Matt Haig – I absolutely loved this book. This is about an alien who comes to Earth in the body of a mathematician who has just discovered a mathematical solution that was deemed unsolvable. The alien is coming because humans are not ready for this information and he must kill everyone who knows that this has been discovered. I enjoyed the exploration of the human existence through the eyes of this alien. I liked the discussions on human nature and the change in the alien throughout the novel.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman – Initially I did not enjoy this book. I found Eleanor insufferable but I was told to keep going and I’m glad I did. This book really hit me as you got to learn why Eleanor was the way she was. I couldn’t add this as a favorite because I found the ending a little stupid, but I would recommend this book. The book is about a 30 something woman who has a strict routine and no social skills due to past traumas.

The Everlasting Rose by Dhonielle Clayton – This is the second book in the Belles trilogy(?). We continue to follow Camilla on her quest to stop the evil queen Sophie from changing the way that the Belles are created and their role in the Orleans society. I like the discussions that Clayton opens up in the series but for some reason these books don’t resonate with me. I will complete the trilogy.

Balk by Lacy Hart – Balk is the sequel to the Change Up, a single dad romance about a baseball player who is let go from his team and is trying to decide what he wants to do. I enjoyed the first book, but this one was a little boring and there was something that happened at the end that put me in mind of a Scooby Doo mystery. I just didn’t love this one.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling – This is, of course, a re-read. I listened to this on audio for the first time and I think I’m going to slowly work my way through the series via audio. I really enjoyed this re-read and it was at the perfect time.

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare – I have slowly been working my way through all of Cassandra Clare’s books and this finale to The Infernal Devices series has by far been my favorite so far.

Womanish by Kim McLarin – This is an essay collection talking about the black female experience. I enjoyed about half of the essays and didn’t the other half. She is a great writer but her voice sometimes grated on me.

These are all of the books that I read in the month of October. I think my favorite of the month is The Humans.
