Review: Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds

Look Both Ways

Everybody missed the bus that fell from the sky, because they were so wrapped up in their middle school walks home. This is an interconnected short story collection that follows different kids from 10 different blocks. There are best friends, loners, worriers, kids facing fears, kids dealing with issues way beyond middle school life. Jason Reynolds is such a great voice for an often overlooked community.

The stories were so good and unpredictable. Jason Reynolds was able to capture a realistic middle school voice and I think that it is a book that should be in any classroom to show a different human experience.

Like any other short story collection, there were so many stories that I enjoyed and there were some that I didn’t like. Since they are vignettes it wasn’t a slog to get through. The premise of the whole story seemed silly but you do get an explanation at the end.

Overall, I highly recommend this middle grade short story collection. Which who is surprised because I have loved everything I’ve read by Jason Reynolds.
