Hey y’all! Today I wanted to talk to you about some big, thicc books that you can escape in while you’re at home social distancing. I really love big books and enjoy getting lost in them. I do love an epic, thick fantasy, but a I also like to sink into a sprawling family drama that spans several generations. Anyway, here are a few of my favorite big books to get lost in.

The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne – OMG! I absolutely love this book! I have a full review here. Basically this follows Cyril Avery from the time his mother is pregnant with him to his death. Cyril is a gay man growing up in Ireland during the 1950’s and this story was so good. Seeing society during this time and things that happened were so interesting and Cyril is such a great character. Definitely one of my favorite characters of all time. This may be a big book but the pacing is impeccable and you will fly through it.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee – This is a family saga that takes place over many generations. This historical fiction starts before World War II in Korea and spans to the 80’s. I don’t generally like war stories but this was interesting because it showed the perspective of the war from a different country. There is discussion about the Japanese occupation of Korea, the closing of the North Korea border, and passing for Japanese. All of these topics were things that I knew nothing about and enjoyed learning about it. It was so interesting to see the different perspectives and this is definitely one that you will fall into. I also, have a full review.

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson – Is the epic story of Ursula Todd, who every time she dies is reborn and makes a different decision with each new life. This book is the most unique on this list because you are essentially you are re-reading the same story over and over. Atkinson is somehow able to make each iteration new and refreshing. The characters are endearing and you are completely engrossed as you read through the story. I have a full review for this one too.
Here is three literary fiction books that will keep you completely caught up while you read them. I didn’t include any fantasy on this list because I want to do a separate post for fantasy books. They are notoriously large anyway so I didn’t want to saturate the list with them.
What’s one of your favorite big books? Let’s chat in the comments.
