MG Book Review: The List of Things That Will Not Change

The List of Things That Will Not Change
2020, Wendy Lamb Books

******I received this book for free via Netgalley and the publisher. This is no way effected my review *****

Bea is 10 years old when her parents sit her down and tell her that they are getting a divorce. Her dad came out as gay. They give Bea a green, her favorite color, notebook and pen that has a a list of things that will not change even though her parents are divorcing. A year later, Bea’s dad is getting married to his boyfriend, who also has a daughter. The fact that Bea is an only child, she is so excited about finally getting a sister.

I don’t know what I expected from this story but it absolutely warmed my heart. Bea was such a realistic character who deals with so much in such an age appropriate way. Bea is not only dealing with her parent’s divorce, she deals with new family dynamics, and her eczema. Her parents put her into therapy to help her cope with all that is going on and the scenes with the therapist were some of my favorite scenes. You really got to know, and love, Bea and understand her actions. Also, I liked that it normalized that children have things that they need to get off of their chest too.

“There are people who will try to make you choose between who you are and who they want you to be.”

This book discusses family acceptance and how to cope when your world is upside down. We got glimpses of what the adults in the story were going through but it never overpowered the story. I liked that the story was so raw and honest. There is a scene at the wedding with Bea’s dad’s fiance and his brother that broke my heart but it was so real.

Overall, this would be an excellent book to add to your middle grade collection. A book on coping and acceptance is done often in middle grade, but this felt different. It hit me right in the feels and I liked the discussions that this book brings up. This could be a good conversation starter about acceptance and knowing your feelings are valid.
