Friday Reads: January 8, 2021

HEEEEYYY Y’ALLLLL!!! This has been a week but Friday is here! 2021 is holding no punches, amiright. Anyway, the end of year post are still coming but, like I said, it’s been a week. My top book will be up next week and Youtube videos will resume next week.

This weekend I plan on doing the Mid Month Book Bash hosted by Doris from All D Books. This is a 4 day monthly readathon (January 8-111) where you basically read whatever you want but it’s to jump start your reading for the month. I have a somewhat ambitious TBR but what’s new. Here are the books that I hope to either start of finish this weekend.

Grown
Katherine Tegen Books, 2020

Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson – I absolutely can’t believe that I didn’t get to this last year. But I know for sure I’m gonna finish this one. I had to stop myself last night because I had work this morning. I could have stayed up and finished this last night.

Song of Solomon
Plume, 1978 (originally published 1977)

Son of Solomon by Toni Morrison – I am buddy reading this with a real life friend. We are listening to the audio book. I’m not that far in but while I move around the house I do plan on getting a lot of it listened to.

Wrath
Gallery Books, 2021

Wrath by Victoria Christopher Murray – This book was just released on January 5 and I have an ARC of it that I needed to read so I plan on doing that this weekend. This is a story about two Black lawyers who meet and fall in love. That’s all that I know, but I read the first chapter last night and loved the writing. So this should be a fun read.

The Secret Lives of Church Ladies
West Virginia University Press, 2020

Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw – This is a short story collection that I have heard mixed things about but overall they have been pretty positive. I figure I can use this to break up some of the full length books I’m reading.

The Grace of Kings (The Dandelion Dynasty, #1)
Saga Press, 2015

The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu – This a for a book club that I have with a couple of friends. I am notorious for waiting until a few days before the meeting to read the book and this is a chunky one. I figure I’ll at least start it this weekend because I’m trying to do better. I have previously read the first 150 pages but I put it down for some reason. I think this time I will actually finish it.

These are all the books that I have to read this weekend. I also plan to film and schedule some blog post for next week. It’s suppose to be pretty chilly in Texas this weekend, so it’s the perfect time to stay indoors and do what I love.

What are your reading plans for this weekend? Let’s chat in the comments.

  1. Enjoyed Song of Solomon. There was a funeral scene that made me cry. Also Morrison writes characters who can go in on people. Like I felt hurt on Milkman’s behalf after what his sister said (although it was pretty much all true). Heard great things about The Secret Life of Church Ladies.

    1. Yes!! That sister read Milkman to filth! Me and my friend I was reading it with were cracking up. I enjoyed most of the stories in The Secret Lives. The audio was good.
